Tourists struggle to book hotel rooms in Puri as prices soar ahead of Rath Yatra

As the Holy Trinity gets ready for Snana Yatra on June 4 and for the subsequent Rath Yatra, the devotees have also begun to stream towards Puri to witness the Grand event on the Grand Road.

However, the soaring prices of hotel rooms in Puri, especially on the Grand Road, have put a dent in the plans of tourists.

As per reports, the rooms which were priced between Rs 1,200 to Rs 2000, are now priced between Rs 10,000 and 12,000. It is like there is no limit on prices anymore. Hotel owners are charging tourists as per their wish.

A tourist and Jagannath devotee, Bandana Das said, “Last year we could not rent a room on the Grand Road, because all the rooms were already booked by the time we tried. Even no rooms were available online too. I do not think we will get a room this year too, given the crowd we are expecting during Rath Yatra. The increased rates do not help too.”

Asked about the room rates, District Tourism Officer, Saroj Pradhan said, “We will hold a meeting with the hotel association to ensure that the tourists who come to Puri during Snana Yatra and the subsequent Rath Yatra, do not get harassed by the middlemen during hotel booking, and get rooms at reasonable prices.”

Girish Nayak, a hotel owner in Puri said, “The rates of hotel rooms should be fixed in such a manner that it does not pinch the hotel owners too. If the room rents are increased then the hotels should mention clearly what led to the increase in room rates.”

Apart from the private hotels, there are some rooms under the control of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) as well. While the rates of those rooms are reasonable, most of those rooms are out of bounds for common devotees.

“There are some rooms under our control which are reserved for the VIPs. We have some spare rooms as well for the devotees which we give on rent for a special price for two days, and one day before Gundicha Jatra,” said an SJTA official.

“As far as this year’s Rath Yatra is concerned, we have already received many applications to book rooms, the number of which is way beyond the available rooms. We will decide who will get rooms after discussing the same with the district administration,” said the official.

Devotees and tourists are also reportedly irked after not being able to book hotel rooms online. It is suspected that the hoteliers have closed their online bookings to extract more money from the customers through offline bookings.

Is BJD heading toward implosion in Ganjam?

If the 'axed' ex-Labour minister of Odisha, Srikant Sahu’s recent acts are any indication, nothing seems to be well in the Ganjam unit of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

After a brief silence of two weeks, Sahu appeared in his Constituency, Polasara on Monday. He was accompanied by his wife while addressing a public meeting in Polasara.

Interestingly, the senior BJD leader not only showed his strength in the meeting ahead of the 2024 elections, but he also cried in front of his supporters while remembering his resignation from the Cabinet recently. Moreover, he reiterated that the sexual harassment allegation brought against him was a conspiracy and heads would roll if he opens his mouth.

Asked about his emotional speech at the meeting, Sahu told reporters, “My emotions were for the love my people have for me. Tears rolled down from my eyes thinking about my people, not about my own prospects in 2024 elections.”

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the former minister is playing the emotional card fearing he would lose votes after getting ousted from the Cabinet.

“Srikant Sahu has brought shame onto the people of Polasara. The voters have already decided to reject Sahu in the upcoming elections. That is why he is playing the emotional card to lure the voters,” alleged Ghumusara BJP president, Gokulananda Mallik.

On the other hand, the political mercury in Gopalpur Assembly constituency has already shot up with the show of strength by current MLA Pradeep Panigrahi. Former BJD MLA, Panigrahi has opened a front against his previous party at Gopalpur and firing salvos at anything BJD in the area.

Speaking to reporters, Panigrahi said, “There is no district in Odisha where the BJD is in a strong position. If you look at southern Odisha, though the picture looks rosy to the BJD, it is not so in reality."

While the BJD has been backing Chief Minister’s political advisor, Gopabandhu Das in Gopalpur to check the advancements of Panigrahi, Das seems to have disappeared from the picture and can nowhere be seen. Instead, former Berhampur MP, Siddhanta Mohapatra is seen attending the party meetings in Gopalpur.

Speculations are rife that Siddhant Mohapatra might be asked to contest against Panigrahi in Gopalpur.

Asked about the party situation in Ganjam, the president of Ganjam BJD, Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik said, “Gopabandhu Das has not disappeared. In fact, he has gone away on some personal work. He will return to Gopalpur soon.”

While the BJD is at a crossroads in Ganjam, the BJP is pinning hopes to take out as many votes as possible from the district to establish itself as the dominating party.
